Death of David Howes

We are very sorry to report the death of David Howes, aged 84, which occurred at the beginning of August.

David was a great supporter of CADLHS. A frequent speaker at our meetings until a few years ago, he will be remembered for his knowledge, particularly relating to shops and businesses of old Chesterfield. He also wrote extensively for us and others about local history matters in the town.

He was also known throughout the district as a self-employed hairdresser, with premises on Cavendish Street (Howes Gents Hairdressers), for 50 years, until he retired in 2005. A life-long resident, David was born in Hasland.

David had a wide range of interests apart from local history, including coin collecting and antiques and at Chesterfield Bowling Club. He was President there in 2012, publishing an account of the past presidents of that organisation.

He was much demand across the district as a speaker at local history and community groups and although David had not undertaken much in the way of this type of engagement for some time, he will be sorely missed for this and his breadth of knowledge generally.

David’s funeral service has taken place.

We would like to pay tribute to David and express our sincere condolences to his family and many friends.
